FROM THE LAND OF LOOMS & LORES - Meenkaaran

Meenkaran

This is our Fisherman who comes on a moped. I love the fact that he still uses that old balance which is such a rare sight these days. He's been coming to our house from a very long time but I've never felt the need to ask him his name 'cos we simply call him 'Meenkaran /Fisherman' :-)

  6. What a lovely post - a meenkaran...we had a meenkaari or a "Machhiwaali" as we called them -a Koli woman (Kolis - the fishing community of Bombay, also considered to be the original inhabitants), her name was Kusum....she'd spent an hour haggling and gossipping with my mom...have some really fond memories of her. Your post made me homesick!

  8. I remember the good old days at Kannur, when we have our Meenkaran coming in with fresh catch so early, we used to have my mom's chapatti/puttu with fish curry and fry for breakfast and go to school. Mmmhh....
